NGA

For an excursion we went to the NGA and were luckily enough to have the chance to be taken behind the scenes to where the photographic area is set up. The NGA has to shoot a wide range of subject matter from big sculptors to littles art works it is very important that the lighting is correct so the image appears as close as possible to the original work. They have two studio's one that is used for copy work and the other is used for bigger works of art. Like CIT they have a digital darkroom where the walls are all neural and have monitors that have been calibrated.

Another reason we went to the NGA we to get an idea of different artist books that were possible and the different materials that could be used and how it could be made.

fashion

We had a fashion workshop with kate luke, this workshop was very useful because i'm doing fashion for my folio this semester so I was able to get some helpful tips for shooting on location and in the studio.

Some tips include

*when shooting into the sun the model face should be up

*can use sun as a hair light

*diffuse the sun, with a reflector 5 in one

* ALWAYS GIVE THE MODEL FEED BACK

*with new models get them to think of a feeling - think of a movie scene or a image for them do copy

*hands side on they look better.

Aerial

I was considering to do aerial photography for my folio, but then we had the workshop on the subject and then I realised how expensive it was but they're many ways to keep the cost down such as using a cherry picker, hot air balloon, plane and helicopter. But the factors that needed to taken when taking aerial photography is whether the photographer wants the photos to be vertical or oblique. Vertical judging from the name the camera is straight down this is ideal for mapping, the use of medium long is important so the perspective will seem right.

The other type of aerial photography is oblique this type is more commonly used in real estate, historical, asset management.

underwater photography

We a an owner of a local dive shop who also took underwater photos, come in and take about the processes that he goes through to achieve his photography. He had to big rules that the lived by when taking underwater photos the first was - "if you can't see your camera gear underwater don't take it under, because all gear can fill with water". The second rule was choose the housing first then get the camera. In water there are always particles in the water but can be minimised for example having to flashes off camera at 45 degrees to the subject.

Cars

With the car workshop we were taught how to take photos of cars both in the studio and on location. when we took the photos in the studio it was important not light the car directly by angle the lights in such a way that they were away from the car and the use of reflectors and black reflectors that makes the line that runs down the middle of the car which is appealing. Cars on location were so much easier because the photographer just needs to position the car in such a way that catch the sun set and then wait, it is important to take a tripod because it may seem to dark to shoot but it is still possible to some really nice shots.

here are some samples of our furniture shots we did that showed the skills in the workshop, we had to take a photo of the whole thing then a shot that showed the detail of the object.

Doing my furniture I found this really amazing website that has all of this really amazing furniture, have a look at where the light is falling , where the hi lights and where the shadows fall able to determine where the light is coming from.

here are some of my favourites --

think this light is hi above the table and angled towards the camera because of the shadow.

I think with this one the photographer used two lights one to get the shadows on the ground and the other to hi light the chair.
